AFTERWORD

It is not clear whether the events recounted in Khusrau and Shirin actually took place at some point in history, or whether they were a product of Nizami’s imagination. However, there was a Persian king named Khusrau who ruled during the Sassanid dynasty, contemporary with the Prophet Muhammad. There is also a historical monument, a carving of two men and a woman, at the Mountain of Bistun near the city of Kirmanshah in western Iran. The carving has been restored, and today the Bistun attracts many Middle Eastern tourists. The artwork has become famous, winning the admiration of artists, lovers of beauty, and all who are inspired by the mysterious romantic theme it suggests.
